Do you think that Singapore is worst than other cities for public transport?
Got me thinking, what do you think? |

Obviously, public transport system is unable to cope, esp with peak hr traffic. When the govt welcomed several hundred thousands of foreign talents to S'pore in recent yrs, they failed to expand the public transport beforehand.

Our public transport cannot make it already, unable to cope with the current population. |

You know what ...my worst MRT BOO experiences :: 1) Smelly feet and BO 2) Giant love birds hugging at the sides of the doors - blocking the commuters 3) Girls with unshaved armpit holding onto the rails right infront of you 4) Coughing without covering with morning bad breath 5) Pretend to dooze off whenever the doors open 6) SARDINE, stuffy, smelly rush hours train 7) Driver forgot to turn on the aircon!!! 8) Commuters next to you read with you while you google iPad ... sigh too bad no $ to afford a car now ... |

Cars are still relatively "affordable" if you go for the not so fancy 2nd hand cars like a 2 yr old Chery QQ or 4 yr old Kia Picanto for $23K. |

peak hour mrt is really bad. im just glad that buses are not that bad. i rather be stuck in a jam than be in a sardine packed mrt.. btw, sat in a friend's picanto before. I was really terrified. The braking system is soo soo lousy. My last experience in a small car was years ago in a 5 year old nissan march. Though the march was manufactured in the 1990s, the brakes are so much better.

A Kia Picanto cannot be worse as a Tata Nano. More likely the brake pads are worn out. |

Picanto is as bad as it gets already. i already swear off the car... i rather sit at the back of a pickup...haha... Braking system not good im referring to the responsiveness. Brake lightly, the whole car jump forward as though u jammed the brake. Fren say it only happen when he ferry passengers. Not sure whats wrong with it also... |

I have driven a Chery QQ and Kia Picanto before. Both serve their primary objectives of providing basic transport in getting you from point A to B. Kia Picanto brakes serve their purpose and are effective. I think your friend's car could be poorly maintained. I feel that your expectations may be a little too high. |

my expectations were pegged to a nissan march made in the late 1990s for a 1litre car, automatic transmission.
for picanto, it of course is underpowered when there are 4 passengers. But when brakes are concerned, it no longer is a matter of performance, but a matter of safety.
a car that does not brake properly is a horror to be in...For example, people cutting abruptly into your lane and u are unable to brake in time. And small cars always gets bullied on the road..
Chery QQ? i rather be in a bus.
having said that, i rarely see QQs on the road le... |

Back to the main topic: Yea, I do agree that behaviour is getting a little bad on trains nowadays. U see people standing at the doors, trying to rush into the trains when the doors are barely open. U see people vying for seats, even though they get down 2,3 stations later. I dunno, a sign of extreme kiasu-ism? Uneducated? Selfish? Or just mere influx of people from overseas?? If u read STOMP on a regular basis, u will see those unruly ridiculous behavior. But guess what? I've not encountered such before. Trust me, most of the posts are exaggerated. Nonetheless, I still see on trains, very often, people giving up seats to those who need it more than them. People who says our mrt behaviour is getting from bad to worse - who r u comparing it with? I mean, r u sure other countries' behavior are that good too??? |

It's really third class. So much for the ministers to keep insisting that it's first class. Trying to bluff who? Hate it most for frequent services disruption. People starting to disbelieve repeated reason for being late. Then there are people who intentionally cough or sneeze right into you. They know that you can't do anything to them. There are foreigners who do that but many are Singaporean. Many keep doing things which they know you can't catch them, eg scratching cars. All such anti-social behavior are not inconsiderate but mental illness. People are getting psyco nowadays. |

People are getting probably psycho nowdays due to the long working hours, and stressed up about the high standards of living and struggling to make ends meet. |

I think it's more like jealousy and people have I don't have mentality. So make some damage to you. For foreigners and pr, this is not my home anyway. Oops, swayed out of topic. |

There's nothing much we can do except to be gracious ourselves. Start from us, and hopefully (cross our fingers), this graciousness will be passed to others. What goes around, comes around. Indeed the train system isn't that first class. I am late for work about 3 times a week due to technical glitches, or when I m changin train at city hall, the line that goes down to orchard always has trains that says DO NOT BOARD. Sometimes, 3 consecutive trains pass by me, and I can only stand at the door and stare.... |

Try the subway in other countries and your opinion of Spore MRT will be changed.
Some of my extreme experience:
In Beijing subway, I was walking back and forth along the platform trying unsuccessfully to board as
crowded trains pulled in one after another with people rushing and shoving. I was unwilling to compete.
A platform staff who had noticed me, approached me and said, "foreign friend, if you don't make an effort
to board, you will never get out of here by train. In which case, please leave the station the same way
you entered." I was marked!
The same situation in Shanghai. Nobody obeys the 'wait-behind-lines-to-let-alighting-passengers-off-first-
before-boarding'. On one instance, I also rushed in and grabbed the nearest available seat, and
ended up with another rushing passenger sitting on my lap! I pushed him off me and we glared at
each other!
In Tokyo, it is the 'people pushers' who shove and pack you into the trains. You get free massage all
over!
So, my experience on Spore MRT has been pleasant.

Rosy, Nowhere in the world does the government body strongly publicise their public transport system as World Class, except Singapore's Land Transport Authority. Hence, public transport in S'pore is expected to be one of the best. |
